Matt Calvert, 10 seconds into the second overtime, tied Columbus' first-round series with the Pittsburgh Penguins at one game apiece, beating Marc-Andre Fleury for his second goal of the game and giving the Blue Jackets a 4-3 win.
A little more from Consol Energy Center:
PENALTY KILLED
After two periods of disciplined hockey, the Penguins self-destructed in the third, taking three in a little more than eight minutes, and the Blue Jackets made them pay; defenseman Jack Johnson, with Kris Letang in the box on a borderline interference call, beat Fleury to tie the game at 3 with 5:41 remaining.
It was Johnson's second goal of the series, and more proof that, particularly in the playoffs, small sample sizes matter. Johnson, deservedly, is a target for stats-heavy analysts, but he's been good for Columbus so far.
SHORT IMPACT
By the end of Pittsburgh's Game 1 victory, Brian Gibbons was playing right wing on a line with Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz. Part of the reason for that, as coach Dan Bylsma said, was Gibbons' straight-line speed; he's probably the fastest skater on Pittsburgh's roster at the moment.
Oddly enough, he managed to park his 5'8-ish frame in front of Sergei Bobrovsky to tip in Pittsburgh's first goal, then showed off his speed (and PK ability) with a shorthanded goal that put Pittsburgh up 2-0. Predictably for the Penguins, though, he didn't finish the period, leaving after a collision with Ryan Johansen.
NI$KANEN UPDATE
We've said this before: Penguins defenseman Matt Niskanen is making himself a very rich man. He's coming off a 46-point regular season that put him on the periphery of the Norris discussion, and he scored his second goal of the playoffs in the first period a few minutes after Gibbons stole one from him.
That's the sort of stuff — high-profile playoff goals, specifically — that net 27-year-old, pending-UFA defenseman enormous contracts. And he's going to have more than his share of opportunities for as long as Pittsburgh lasts in the tournament.
MAXIMUS DECIMUS MERIDIUS
Russell Crowe was in the building!
Never heard back, though.
