Backers have a had a chance to walk around the hangar a bit in the first module release, but backers haven’t had a chance to jump into the action and get a taste of the game that their donations helped bring to life. After a long wait, supporters will finally be able to take to the stars and dive into some battles by the end of this month.

The long-awaited Arena Commander dog-fighting module suffered a few upsetting delays, but the footage out of PAX East proved to the community that the wait would be worth their while. The game’s creator, Chris Roberts, addressed the delays in a blog post last week and promised that a concrete release date for the early access module would be coming shortly. In this week’s Arena Commander Weekly Report, Roberts delivered on that promise and revealed a new launch date for the dog fighting module…

Access to both the single player Free Flight mode and the Vanduul Swarm mode should give backers plenty to keep busy with until the next bit of content is released. Even Roberts managed to crash his ship a few times pulling out of the hangar during his demo, so we expect backers to be working through a bit of a learning curve as they adjust to the game’s incredibly precise physics and controls. The Free Flight mode aims to offer a testing ground for pilots to adjust to the swing of things before moving over to the fight in the Vanduul Swarm mode.

Roberts went on to outline the development schedule leading up to the May 29 Arena Commander release, including lots of server updates and maintenance to prepare the system for the incoming flux in traffic. Hopefully the team is able to stay on schedule, but Roberts did acknowledge that there is always the chance for “unforeseen issues” that could possibly alter the launch timeline. If all goes well, none of those will come up and backers will be taking off by the end of next week.

After the dog fighting module successfully launches, the development team will move forward with finishing off other game modes and addressing problems that are identified by the Arena Commander’s participants. There is still plenty of work to be done before the final version of the game launches, but hopefully the dog fighting module will give us all a preview of what’s to come.

Will you be logging into the Star Citizen Arena Commander dog fighting module later this month? Let us know in the comments.
