The latest donations to the Star Citizen project helped the game pass another milestone and take the total over $161,000,000. It may sound crazy that gamers are still throwing money at this project three years after its projected launch date has come and gone, but many backers have had access to the multiplayer alpha builds and the community is very impressed by what they’ve seen so far. The development team is also very open and offers frequent updates and videos about the latest changes or features, so fans know progress is still being made (though some backers have taken refunds and walked away).

The extensive video offers a behind-the-scenes look at the motivation for the changes and the implementation of the updates. There’s no denying that the game looks incredibly impressive and unlike anything else that currently exists in the genre.
Time will tell if Star Citizen is able to spark a renaissance of the space flight-sim genre or if it just connects with a core audience, but either way we’re still anxiously awaiting the completion and full release of the core game and the stand-alone single-player component, as well.
Star Citizen has no set release date. At launch, the sci-fi space simulation game will be available for PC and Linux.
