The third season will continue the exploits of Starfleet Captain Michael Burnham and her crew on the U.S.S. Discovery. Star Trek Discovery had a couple of franchise staples make an appearance in season 2 with Captain Christopher Pike showing up with the Enterprise and a storyline involving Spock. A first-look trailer and additional details of the third season were released at San Diego Comic-Con last year. What we know about the season so far is that special guest David Ajal will join the crew and play Cleveland Booker.

During an interview at Comic-Con last year alongside Sonequa Martin-Green, who plays Captain Burnham, Ajal described his character as part of a new world. Martin-Green added that he is “a tangible representation of where we are going." Fans will remember that at the end of season 2, Discovery was shot far into the future - about 900 years, in fact. Not everything will be new though, as there will be several fan favorites returning including Saru, Sylvia Tilly, Paul Stamets, Doctor Hugh Culber and Philippa Georgiou.
The evolution of Michael Burnham as a character has been a major part of Discovery’s appeal. The character started out with a rebellious streak as the first season had Burnham navigate the Federation’s war with the Klingon Empire, while the second season brought a galaxy-spanning mystery that revealed some startling revelations about Burnham’s family and introduced the time travel element that laid the foundation for season 3.
Season 3 of Star Trek Discovery will premiere on CBS All Access October 15.
