In a Christopher Nolan-esque spin on things, there are even constants within that constant of Star Wars domination. One such mainstay is the presence of Anthony Daniels as relatably neurotic protocol droid C-3PO, a character he has embodied regularly since the franchise’s inception in 1977. So it should come as little surprise to see Daniels suited up and ready for action once again. But rather than the shiny gold exterior fans have grown to expect from 3PO, this new outfit is rather stretchier and, ironically, quite a bit more high-tech.

The veteran actor recently posted an image to his Instagram account that seems to suggest some new C-3PO content on its way in the not-too-distant future. Featuring himself in a motion capture suit and sporting a pose reminiscent of a vaudeville act, Daniels made sure to clear up any confusion with plenty of hashtags confirming the involvement of his famous droid character and the Star Wars series. “Finally,” he posted in the caption, “a new suit - that fits!” This is likely in reference to issues he had in the past with the fit of the full C-3PO costume.
Speculation would suggest that this particular mocap session has something to do with an upcoming droid-focused special on Disney+ titled Star Wars: A Droid Story. The special, announced in 2020, will be an animated feature focused on a new character guided by C-3PO and his counterpart, R2-D2. This would fit in with the motion capture equipment, as nobody needs a full suit of metal when recording voice over, at least unless they’re really dedicated to method acting.
This wouldn’t be the first time Daniels provided the voice for an animated version of C-3PO, as he’s been doing such things periodically since the infamous and regularly teased Star Wars Holiday Special way back in 1978. The English theater actor turned science fiction icon has voiced the character in dozens of video games and animated features over the years, including a number of LEGO Star Wars projects and even the animated series The Clone Wars. So one more notch on that belt should be no biggie for a seasoned pro like him.
There’s still no word on when Star Wars: A Droid Story will eventually release, but this teaser from Daniels should indicate that the production is mostly on track. However the special turns out, it’s definitely heartwarming to see everybody’s favorite-ish protocol droid back and ready to panic once again.
