Reddit user lowberg posted to the Star Wars Battlefront 2 online forums yesterday, announcing their creation of a ‘Progression Droid’ to farm for credits “while simultaneously building a sense of pride and accomplishment.” The handy little robot does just enough to ensure that the user doesn’t get kicked from games, while slowly racking up a significant amount of credits over time.
Of course, if more players use a similar approach it will only ruin the Star Wars Battlefront 2 experience for other users, but right now the Reddit poster sees it as a small act of defiance towards a company that is currently generating a lot of hate from the gaming community. With Belgium’s gaming commission recently announcing that the game’s loot boxes classify as gambling, the title is under a lot of pressure to change if EA wants to redeem itself in the eyes of Star Wars fans.
As of right now, the game is certainly under-performing, with sales down significantly when compared to the first Battlefront title. Despite this, there are still some loyal fans that are enjoying their Battlefront 2 experience, even with the flaws in the game’s microtransaction system. And the Star Wars experience has undoubtedly never looked or handled better than in EA’s newest title.
The last nail in the coffin for a release that had the potential to be a contender for Game of the Year would be if several fans followed in the Reddit user’s footsteps and started using bots rather than playing. As we can see from the Star Wars Battlefront 2 reviews, the game is hit and miss in places but with a little work could have been something great. It’s up to EA and the game’s community to work together in order to decide whether Battlefront 2 can be a success, or whether we’re going to have to wait until the publisher completes the trilogy to finally get the experience we’ve been waiting for.
