As seen in the Imgur album below, fans can scroll through all of the leftover conceptual assets for Star Wars Battlefront 4 from Free Radical Design, with the artwork showing that the storyline was being considered as a “what-if” scenario, in which the roles for the characters within the film series’ Episodes I through VI were flipped. For instance, instead of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Mace Windu being Jedi Masters, they become Sith Lords instead, while others such as Darth Maul and Count Dooku were being designed with Jedi garb.
Apparently, the foundations for the story elements of Free Radical Design’s cancelled Star Wars Battlefront 4 relied on Anakin Skywalker killing Yoda in a duel at Naboo and murdering Padmé Amidala, causing Obi-Wan to turn to the Dark Side, and ultimately dooming Luke and Leia to the same fate. As far as the gameplay was concerned, the studio’s take for Battlefront 4 was supposedly going to include battles much bigger than any other entry before it, with a large portion of a planet being playable, and it would have involved massive player counts.
While all of the aforementioned concept art and story details of Free Radical Design’s scrapped Star Wars Battlefront 4 will likely be intriguing to many fans of the science fiction franchise, it’s worth noting once more that this project won’t come to fruition. Additional insult to injury comes with the fact that Free Radical Design’s Battlefront 4 never stood a chance of getting off the ground, as its precursor in Battlefront 3 was nixed when production was almost “99%” complete.
All of this said, though, perhaps these kinds of alternate universe ideas will get incorporated into the Star Wars franchise one way or another sometime down the line. Then again, with Disney owning the rights to the series, such meddling with the canon seems highly unlikely.
Free Radical Design’s Star Wars Battlefront 4 was cancelled a long time ago.
