While fans are aware that the core game will not come with a dedicated single player campaign such as Galactic Conquest as seen in Star Wars Battlefront 2, DICE continues to reveal more and more content that players will be able to find in this new Star Wars Battlefront once it releases. The slow news drip continued this week as a brand new game mode called Drop Zone was revealed.
Revealed on EA’s official Star Wars site, Drop Zone is a mode that is being described as a King of the Hill style experience. In Drop Zone, two teams of eight will be fighting over drop pods that are falling through the atmosphere onto the planet surfaces. As players reach these fallen pods, a short capture sequence will play out until it has been claimed. Teams will win if all five pods are captured or a team controls the majority of them after the ten minute match timer expires.
Pods can be contested and if a stalemate occurs after a certain amount of time, a new drop pod will fall forcing teams to work to capture the new target as well.
Interestingly enough, once claimed, the pods will slowly start to open, revealing a Power Pickup inside. Players can then choose to inherit some risk to hang around and wait for the powerup or they can head to the new location where a drop pod has already begun to fall. DICE has not revealed what sort of powerups will be awaiting the player but they have commented that getting “your hands on the contents can definitely be worth the risk.”
Fans eager to try out the game prior to launch will get an opportunity to do so through a multiplayer beta which was recently announced for the game. Coming sometime in October, players will be able to try out Drop Zone for the first time anywhere along with the previously announced Survival and Walker Assault modes.
Through out its development, EA and DICE have continue to try and distance Battlefront from the widely popular shooter, Battlefield. Many fans continue to worry that DICE is simply applying a new skin and fresh coat of paint over the tried and true Battlefield shooter formula, though the studio continues to disprove such theories. In a recent interview, DICE’s general manager Patrick Bach confirmed that many players will be surprised to learn that Star Wars Battlefront is a DICE developed title as the studio continues to push the game in a different direction.
