First off, there’s Heroes vs. Villains, which is a 6v6 match type that has three players from each team randomly spawn as either a Hero or a Villain, with the other teammates playing as Rebel soldiers or Imperial Troopers. Possible Heroes include Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Prince Leia, whereas the Villains consist of Boba Fett, Darth Vader, and the newly revealed Emperor Palpatine.
The goal of Heroes vs. Villains is to eliminate all the Heroes or Villains on the opposing side. When a Hero or Villain dies, that player will then respawn as a regular soldier, and the game goes on until all the Heroes or Villains have been killed.
The Heroes and Villains will also play a role in the Battles match type as well, which can be played either 1v1 or against enemy AI. When enemies are defeated in this mode, they drop tokens, and the first team to collect 100 tokens is declared the victor, so it’s similar to the Kill Confirmed mode from the Call of Duty franchise. The Heroes and Villains come into play in the Hero Battles variant of the match type, which allows players to control one of the special characters instead of a generic soldier.
The third and final game mode detailed by DICE is Training Missions. As one might imagine, these are essentially tutorials that are designed to help players master various aspects of the game. The Training Missions are lumped together with the regular Missions mode, which means that they can be played in online and split-screen co-op as well as solo.
It seems like Star Wars Battlefront will have plenty of content when it releases in a few weeks, but it probably would have been a good idea if DICE tested out these modes in the beta. After all, they already ran into some severe balancing issues with the Walker Assault match type, and there’s a possibility that these other modes will have similar issues at launch.
In any case, it’s good to see that players will have numerous opportunities to control fan-favorite characters such as Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker, as actually becoming them in the Drop Zone or Walker Assault match types isn’t guaranteed. It’s smart of DICE to have modes directly dedicated to allowing players to live out the fantasy of playing as their favorite Star Wars characters, and so we’re excited about these modes, as long as they’re balanced properly.
Star Wars Battlefront will launch on November 17th for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
