Star Wars Battlefront has been all about the hype since day one. The development team promised that the first gameplay trailer would break the internet and the hyperbole hasn’t slowed down since then. The in-engine rendered cinematic and gameplay trailers have all been fantastic and fans of the Star Wars franchise haven’t been disappointed. That said, the first reveal of the Star Wars Battlefront’s Fighter Squadron mode is guaranteed to bring out the fanboy or fangirl in everyone far more than any of the previous trailers have.

The game’s first cinematic trailer definitely had a mic drop moment when Darth Vader shows up in the last moments, but the reveal trailer for the Fighter Squadron mode has about five of those jaw-dropping moments. For a game that we assume is mostly about ground combat, it’s a little surprising and refreshing how impressive this showcase of the space fighter sim feature is. Watch out Star Citizen…

The new multiplayer mode was teased earlier this week and then revealed at Gamescom 2015 and the first trailer shows gameplay from both sides of the battle. The Rebel units attempt to shoot an Imperial transport out of the sky, while the Imperials attempt to provide cover and support until the ship is in the clear. As we hinted, some surprising cameos make the battle even more exciting than players might expect.

The battle starts off with a standard X-Wing versus Tie Fighter battle, but quickly snowballs into a much bigger firefight. The X-Wings call in an A-Wing for support, which was exciting enough for fans of Star Wars vehicles, but the firepower doesn’t stop there. After the Imperials strike back with a Tie Interceptor, the Millenium Falcon shows up to finish off the transport ship and claim the victory. As the trailer closes, we see Boba Fett’s Slave I arrive on the scene, as well. That’s a lot of iconic ships crammed into one reveal trailer.

The trailer shows multiple perspectives of the battle and offers what appears to be an unedited look at the mode’s HUD. The interface looks great and appears to provide a lot of intel without cluttering up the screen too much. We won’t know for sure until we get hands on with the mode, but if Fighter Squadron is as robust as it looks, it may be a game-selling feature for a lot of fans who were on the fence.

What do you think of the Fighter Squadron reveal? Do you think the flight battles look even more exciting than the ground combat? Let us know in the comments.

Star Wars Battlefront is set to release for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC on November 17, 2015.
