Ahead of release, discussion of the game has been dominated by questions of whether or not it will live up to prior installments. With well-loved elements like space battles being dropped, there was some concern during development that EA was content to have DICE produce a Star Wars themed Battlefield title.

However, hands-on time with the game did a great deal to convince many skeptics that Battlefront had plenty to offer on its own terms. Does the finished product live up to the hype? Here’s the word on the street as of the tie of writing.

Videogamer (Steven Burns)

Score: 7/10

US Gamer (Kat Bailey)

Score: 3.5/5

Attack of the Fanboy (William Schwartz)

Score: 3.5/5

Giant Bomb (Dan Ryckert)

Score: 3/5

Destructoid (Chris Carter)

Score: 6/10

It seems that DICE managed to nail the Star Wars feeling — but struggled to build a compelling game around it. Battlefront will likely be a sales behemoth thanks to the hype surrounding The Force Awakens, but it remains to be seen whether it will retain its player base for very long.

Star Wars fans will certainly enjoy the effort that’s been made to replicate the feel of the original trilogy, but it’s a shame to hear that the game is light on content. DLC will help mitigate that problem, but that’s sure to put off some players who would rather not wait (and pay) for Battlefront to be fleshed out further.

Star Wars Battlefront is available now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
