Unfortunately, the bad news about Star Wars Battlefront doesn’t end there. EA community manager Sledgehammer70 shared another disappointing update to the Star Wars Battlefront subbredit this week, letting gamers know the developer is omitting a major feature many figured would be available in the game.
At first glance, that doesn’t seem like a very big deal. However, for gamers who have played the Battlefield series, this is a serious sin on the part of EA. Needless to say, the reactions so far on Reddit and around the web have been overwhelmingly negative.
Much of that frustration is due to gamers’ expectations that Star Wars Battlefront would incorporate many of the features available in the Battlefield series. Even despite the many statements from EA and DICE that Star Wars Battlefront is very different from the military-based shooter, gamers assumed there would be some crossover, especially with something like server browsing.
For those who are unfamiliar, the Battlefield series offers a unique system for joining multiplayer battles that lets players filter through severs to find the one that best suits their playing style and mood. This is especially true for PC gamers, who have become accustomed to customization in their multiplayer gaming. Gamers are able to browse servers by ping, map, number of players, and game modes.
Sledgehammer70 was quick to note that EA isn’t leaving players high and dry, but will instead be instituting a skill-based matchmaking system that will automatically pair players with other gamers around the world who are at a similar skill level, similar to the way Call of Duty games pair players.
Unfortunately, this new skill-based system may hamper gamers’ ability to play with their friends. This is especially true considering EA is scrapping the squad system for a simpler buddy system that links two people together within the game. We’ll note that EA has yet to provide any concrete details on how the matchmaking system will work within Star Wars Battlefront, so there may yet be ways for gamers to find and play with friends, and create custom matches.

Star Wars Battlefront is set to release November 17, 2015 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
