Star Wars: Dark Forces originally released on MS-DOS and Mac in 1995, followed by the original PlayStation in 1996. It was one of many Doom clones following the hit 1993 shooter’s release. It was also the first in what would become known as the Jedi Knight series following mercenary Kyle Katarn’s adventures alongside the Rebel Alliance in its battle against the Galactic Empire.

Shadow Art Games took the chance to thank supporters for their patience with the project and the studio’s silence since the last update. Despite its progress, the studio says the project is going on hiatus after feeling it was rushing the development of the remake. Instead, Dark Forces 2.0 will undergo a major overhaul in an effort to provide a “more faithful” experience to the original game.

The update is bookended with a small snippet of in-game footage showing the remake in motion on Unreal Engine 4. While short, the remake appears to be running smoother and the level design is cleaner than the November 2020 update.

A silver lining to the whole situation is no attempts appear to have been made to shut down the project. Disney has been very protective of the Star Wars brand since it bought Lucasfilm in 2012, shutting down multiple fan projects, including a remake of the original Knights of the Old Republic. It is still possible for Shadow Art Games to suffer a similar fate, but the new update should keep fans at least somewhat optimistic about the project’s future.
