The movie rating website Rotten Tomatoes relies on fans to rate movies and give honest reviews to keep their content up and running. Fans can vote on how good a movie was, and sometimes those ratings surprise viewers and critics alike. For example, the new Sonic movie is rated higher than Star Wars Episode 9. During the year, Rotten Tomatoes has a variety of fan-voted competitions to see what movies fans love the most in certain categories.

This month, Rotten Tomatoes is running a Best Summer Movie campaign, and several Reddit communities, including prequelmemes, are working together to make Revenge of the Sith the number one summer movie in the world. While some communities are raising money for Coronavirus relief, like the Halo community, the Star Wars fanbase is fighting to get Revenge of the Sith the number one Ultimate Summer Movie.
The campaign has already locked all Marvel movies out of the running, including Avengers Endgame, which may return to theaters after the pandemic is over. The goal of this weird campaign is to have only Star Wars titles in the final four, ensuring that the galaxy far, far away is in the number one spot no matter what. Although the campaign isn’t over yet, the Star Wars fans are battling against some big summer flicks like Finding Nemo and Raiders of the Lost Ark.
However, the internet has proved over and over again that with enough Reddit groups working together, they can alter the course of online voting contests at a whim. For example, in spite of being released on the last day of March, the Persona 5 Royal Edition was voted the best game of March 2020. Another would be the Lays Potato chip flavor voting campaign that went viral for its orange-juice-and-toothpaste-flavored madness.
And don’t forget the 50,000 Battlefront 2 fans trying to save their servers by signing petitions. These weird campaigns get people to come together for some of the strangest group projects on the internet. But it shows that people can work together en masse to get something done, and the Star Wars community certainly loves their memes.
