It is clear that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order takes place after the Jedi purge started by Order 66 as portrayed in Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Official story details say that main character Kal Kestis “narrowly escaped the Jedi purge” and in the game, the player will lead him on a quest to rebuild the Jedi Order. Obviously then, the game has to take place after Revenge of the Sith.

While it is easy to say that the game has to take place before the original Episode IV: A New Hope because characters like Kal do not appear within that time, it is possible to set an even earlier endpoint to where the game falls on the Star Wars timeline. That’s mainly due to the appearance of Saw Gerrera in the E3 2019 trailer for the game. Saw Gerrera first made an appearance in the Clone Wars animated series, which obviously takes place between Episode II and Episode III. He also makes appearances in Star Wars Rebels when he is older.

WARNING: Some spoilers for Star Wars Rebels and Rogue One follow.

In the trailer for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Saw Gerrera looks a little older than he does in Star Wars Rebels Season 3 but younger than his appearance in the show’s Season 4, albeit the game and show have very different animation and art styles. So, it’s likely that the game takes place after his appearance in Star Wars Rebels Season 3 but before his appearance in Season 4 and his eventual demise in Rogue One.

Another clue that the game is closer to Rebels and Rogue One than it is to Episode III is the stormtroopers seen in game footage. The stormtroopers are the typical stormtroopers as seen in Episode IV, Rogue One, and Rebels. Also on the topic of enemies helping to place the game on the timeline, Inquisitors are known to be a major enemy in the game. The Inquisitors were introduced in Star Wars Rebels, and it even looks like this screenshot from the game could be the Seventh Sister. The Seventh Sister is killed in the Season 2 finale of Star Wars Rebels, so if this is her, Jedi: Fallen Order would have to take place sometime before that point.

So, it is safe to say that the game occurs between Episode III and IV, and it very likely occurring during the same time period as Star Wars Rebels, probably around the time of Season 2 or 3 of the show. If that is the case, that would be about 3 BBY on the Star Wars in-universe timeline, meaning three years before the Battle of Yavin as seen in A New Hope.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order releases November 15, 2019 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
