In a series of tweets, Aspyr clarified the situation to fans who were curious about how the eventual release of the Restored Content DLC would impact any ongoing game of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2. One fan asked whether they will be able to use their ongoing save or if they’ll have to restart with a new game. Aspyr confirmed that any saves from the current version of Knights of the Old Republic 2 will not be compatible with the Restored Content DLC version of Star Wars: KOTOR 2.

While existing save files won’t be compatible with Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2’s Restored Content DLC, Aspyr also confirmed that players won’t have to delete their old save files. They’ll still be able to play the original version of Knights of the Old Republic 2, along with their saves, by selecting an option in the game’s main menu.
Long story short, the base version of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 and the Restored Content DLC version of Knights of the Old Republic 2 will effectively be separate experiences on the same Nintendo Switch game card. Players can pick one or the other, but can’t transition between the two.
To be clear, this news is neither surprising nor controversial. While details regarding the official Restored Content DLC have yet to be shared, the original mod for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 is robust, to say the least. It’s a dramatically different experience that goes beyond restoring cut content. Save files crossing over would be a very awkward transition.
While it makes sense for save files to be split, that doesn’t make it any less frustrating of a situation for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 players on Switch. It’s going to take a very dedicated player to play through the base game and then restart for the Restored Content DLC. It’s still great for Aspyr to be creating the Restored Content DLC in the first place, though, if only for Star Wars’ most dedicated fans.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 is available now on PC and Switch.
