Asked to “pull some strings” with Disney so that Gunn could make a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic movie, Gunn surprised fans by rejecting the idea. Gunn both doesn’t want to make the movie and doesn’t want to see it made into a movie. In explanation, Gunn says that, “Just because it’s a perfect video game doesn’t mean it needs to be a movie.” In other words, Gunn thinks Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic deserves to be appreciated in the medium it was originally created in.

Gunn’s devotion to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is apparent in the several tweets he shared on the topic. Gunn explains that he believes Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is “still the greatest video game of all time.” He says that it’s his favorite Star Wars-related media, across games, movies, TV shows, and even toys and comics. Clearly, Gunn holds Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic in high regard.

Regardless of Gunn’s feelings on the matter, he has no real control over the Star Wars franchise’s direction in either film or video games. It’s entirely possible that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic moves forward in some capacity in the future. All Gunn is saying that he believes the original video game is sacred and that he won’t be involved with any project that does move forward.

There have absolutely been rumors about Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic being made into a movie, too. In 2019, a rumor spread that Laeta Kalogridis was writing a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic screenplay for Lucasfilm. In early 2020, that rumor expanded to include both a movie and a TV show. No recent news has been shared about the possibility.

As far as video games go, there are also rumors regarding Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic projects. For example, a remake was rumored to be made by Aspyr. A Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3 has also been rumored, though from a surprising developer unaffiliated with Electronic Arts. It seems inevitable that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic returns eventually in some capacity. Hopefully, whatever form it takes, it lives up to the series’ legacy and its fans’ expectations.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is available now on PC and iOS/Android devices.
