As Star Wars continues to evolve, and fans further learn what the Force is capable of, there are bound to be some force powers that seem rather obscure to casual fans. This could be because some Force powers are buried deep within the pages of books and comics, or just missed upon viewing one of the films.
10 Thought Shield
If fans have ever wondered why Jedi and Sith don’t just use the Force to stop each other during fights, look no further than Thought Shield. This ability is one of the essential skills of a Force user and has been taught to Padawans at the earliest ages. It allows for the user to create a mental shield so other Force users cannot predict their emotions and moves in a fight.
This is a crucial ability, as it prevents counter-attacks. When two Force users are fighting, they are too focused on using Thought Shield to stop the opponent from invading their subconscious and figuring out their next move; therefore they can’t just use the Force to steal each other’s sabers.
9 Alter Damage
Some fans of Star Wars have wondered how everyone these days seems to survive a gut wound in Star Wars. In The Phantom Menace, Qui-Gon Jinn was struck down with a stab to his gut from the sinister Darth Maul. In the most recent Star Wars tale, Obi-Wan Kenobi, both the Grand Inquisitor and Reva are stabbed through the stomach, but do not die.
There’s a valid reason for this, as Force users can use Alter Damage. This Force power allows Jedi, and even Sith, to alter the damage done by their lightsaber, and how powerful the damage is that the target takes. Thus, it is possible to stab someone non-fatally with the weapon.
8 Breath Control
This power allows Force users to suppress the instinct for a body to shut down after long periods without oxygen. Through this Force ability, Jedi and Sith can go long periods without oxygen. This ability is greatly useful when a room is filled with toxic or poisonous fumes and gases.

The Phantom Menace saw Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi, using this ability after the Trade Federation attempted to poison them with toxic gas. This power is great for areas where the air is thin, or when the Force user is underwater.
7 Flashburn
There exists a power in the Star Wars universe that is like a voluntary mind erasure. Flashburn was the term used by the Jedi Order regarding those that utilize the dangerous ability to shut down areas of their mind in response to emotional trauma. Perhaps Rey unknowingly used this power in The Force Awakens, and that is why she does not remember her parents.
By using Flashburn, Force users can seal off and forget emotional pain that would inhibit their Jedi duties, or memories that could persuade them, in grief, to turn to the Dark Side of the Force.
6 Force Speed
Star Wars offers its viewers some incredible lightsaber duels; most notably, the high-speed fights that are present throughout the Prequel Trilogy. In Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker ( turned Darth Vader) have their climactic fight on Mustafar. Many fans might wonder how they were able to strike each other so fast and predict the movements of their blades. This is in part to Force Speed.
This Force power allows users to increase their speed during duals and combat. It can also be used to run great distances, at a high speed. However, due to the energy needed to use this power, it greatly weakens the user as it feeds off of their metabolism.
5 Dopplegänger
Although this power has been in Star Wars Legends for a long time, it was reintroduced to the Star Wars canon with The Last Jedi. Jedi Master Luke Skywalker used this power to distract the First Order, and confront Kylo Ren whilst giving the remaining Resistance members time to flee.
The power itself allows the Force user to create a short-lived duplicate of themselves. It acts as near indistinguishable and takes an abundance of energy from the user. Not to be confused with Force Ghosts, it’s great for entering locations without causing true harm. Users can also move objects with telekinesis to further the illusion.
4 Hibernation Trance
When times call upon it, those that have trained in the Force can enter a Hibernation Trance. This ability slows the user’s metabolism and breathing to a standstill state. They use one-tenth of the air that a normal individual would need, and would seem to onlookers that they are dead.
Those that have trained in Hibernation Trance can use this power for days, or perhaps weeks. Luke Skywalker used this ability with the training of Jedi Grandmaster Yoda, as well as in Star Wars Legends when on long hyperspace flights to conserve supplies and oxygen.
3 Animal Bond
The Force works in mysterious ways, but one thing is clear: the Force binds all living things. As such, animals can be tamed and bonded with Force users, if they possess the will and calmness to do so. Force users can use this ability to calm beasts, or even use them in battle, something that Luke was unsuccessful with when it came to Rancors.

The animated show Star Wars: Rebels featured Ezra communicating with space creatures through the Force, to great power. It’s a passive ability, and one that shows how peaceful and loving the Jedi are, as they seek a bond with nature.
2 Force Healing
Qui-Gon Jinn seems to be the butt of many jokes surrounding the Force. When Rey used Force Healing in The Rise of Skywalker, many fans wondered why Obi-Wan Kenobi didn’t just use it on his dying master. This ability allowed a Force user to heal oneself or others, through the transference of life force energy.
This ability can heal wounds, including lethal ones. Depending on the severity of the wound, it could be a fatal exchange depending on how much energy and life force are needed to transfer. It’s one of the more obscure powers, simply because it contradicts some other abilities.
1 Flow-Walking
Flow-Walking is perhaps one of the most dangerous abilities that a Force user can wield. This rare Force power allows users to view the past and the future. Once Flow-Walking has commenced, those powerful in the Force can even alter some events that transpire, to change the course of the future.
It’s a dangerous skill, as meddling with time is something that no one should do, especially considering how fragile and messy the timeline can already be in Star Wars. Luke Skywalker greatly warned of Flow-Walking to Ben Skywalker in Star Wars Legends.
