Since its acquisition by Disney, the Star Wars franchise has been testing out different media to deliver stories about a galaxy far, far away. After finding success with The Mandalorian, which has greenlit Season 3, television has become an appealing outlet for the franchise. The premise for the Rogue One prequel was previously announced as a story centered around Cassian Andor, Deigo Luna’s ill-fated character from the Rogue One film.

This latest bit of news on the series, which is scheduled to start filming this year, is that Tony Gilroy will take over as showrunner for Stephen Schiff. Gilroy wrote and directed reshoots for Rogue One, and was already expected to write and direct a few episodes for the series. He now moves into a role that will give him more control of the overall direction of the series.
Disney continues to release information on a number of projects it is currently working on for the Star Wars franchise, most recently dropping the news that a female-led Star Wars TV series is in the works.
With the success of The Mandalorian and the decreasing returns from their big-budget tentpole movies, television projects might be the avenue to deliver fans some quality Star Wars projects in the future.
The Untitled Rogue One Prequel is expected to air in 2021.
