As announced by EA, Star Wars: Squadrons takes place after the events of Return of the Jedi, and it sees the Galactic Empire at odds with the New Republic. In the single player campaign, players will play as both a New Republic pilot as well as a pilot fighting on behalf of the Galactic Empire. These characters and their ships can be customized, with EA stating that all of this customization will be earned “solely through gameplay.”

Alongside the campaign, Star Wars: Squadrons will boast a 5v5 multiplayer component as well, giving players the chance to battle it out with friends in X-Wings, TIE-fighters, and many other iconic Star Wars ships. These battles will take Star Wars: Squadrons players all across the galaxy, at some familiar and never-before-seen locations from the Star Wars universe. There will be some brand new characters as well, along with cameos by familiar faces from the movies.
It was also confirmed after the trailer that Star Wars: Squadrons will be available for PC (through EA Origin, Steam, and the Epic Games Store), PS4, and Xbox One, with cross-play support. The game will also support virtual reality on PC, though it wasn’t specified if PlayStation VR support is included as well. Those wanting to see more will have to wait for the EA Play event on Thursday, June 18, as that’s when EA will be pulling the curtain back on the first-ever Star Wars: Squadrons gameplay.
And finally, it was confirmed by Electronic Arts that Star Wars: Squadrons will be released at a budget price of $39.99. No reason was given for the budget price, but perhaps it means the game will be on the shorter side. Whatever the case may be, more information should come to light at EA Play.
Fans will notice that there was no mention of Star Wars: Squadrons for next-generation consoles. However, thanks to the PS5 and Xbox Series X being backward compatible with the PS4 and Xbox One respectively, the game should still be playable on the new systems when they launch.
Star Wars: Squadrons will launch on October 2 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
