Tales of the Jedi is written and created by Dave Filoni and Charles Murray, part of the creative team behind the long-running animated television series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Filoni developed the concept while he was working on Disney’s highly successful streaming series The Mandalorian, and it was officially revealed in May of this year.

Disney’s annual D23 Expo is taking place this weekend, and unsurprisingly it is chock full of big reveals. One such reveal is the first trailer for Tales of the Jedi and plenty of new details about the show. We now know that the series will be divided into two parts that each follow a different character. The first half of the series will show Ahsoka Tano becoming a Jedi and training with Anakin Skywalker. The second half of the series will be about Count Dooku’s slow turn to the Dark Side, as well as him training his padawan, a young Qui-Gon Jinn.
Ahsoka Tano is a somewhat lesser known character in the Star Wars universe that first became popular in The Clone Wars series and more recently in the second season of The Mandalorian. She is currently scheduled to receive her own Star Wars streaming series on Disney+, entitled Ahsoka. In addition to Ahsoka and Dooku, Tales of the Jedi will feature appearances from many of the most beloved characters in the prequel trilogy, including Mace Windu, Qui-Gon Jinn, Yoda, and Anakin Skywalker, as well as Princess Leia’s father Bail Organa, a female Jedi of Yoda’s species named Yaddle, and the Cantina alien Ponda Baba from A New Hope.
The series will be divided into 6 episodes, each one exploring a different period in the character’s life and running around 15 minutes long. Most of the major roles will be reprised by their original actors, including Liam Neeson as Qui-Gon, Ashley Eckstein as Ahsoka, and Matt Lanter (from The Clone Wars) as the voice of Anakin. Liam Neeson’s son Micheál Richardson will voice the young Qui-Gon.
The series is being marketed as an anthology series, though so far it only tells two different stories. This makes one wonder if the show is expected to return for another season to tell the stories of even more Jedi. At this point we don’t know, but it seems likely. Dave Filoni is also the creator of Star Wars: The Bad Batch, another animated spin-off show, whose second season releases on September 28.
Tales of the Jedi will premiere on Disney+ on October 26.
