In new interviews, John Boyega (who plays Finn) and Kelly Marie Tran (who plays Rose Tico) explain how they teamed up to prank Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson. Speaking to Mashable, Boyega reveals that “Kelly is responsible for turning the Star Wars set into a Pokémon GO set. Kelly made Rian Johnson walk off set thinking that she found a Pikachu right outside the door.”
Speaking to The Star Wars Show, Tran elaborates on this mischievousness.
The prank also involved using chalk to draw the word ‘Pikachu’ on the sidewalk outside the set while the cast and crew waited patiently for Rian Johnson to discover it. Tran also says that the set-up is “one of my proudest moments.”
Little did Rian Johnson know that there is actually a far easier way to unlock Pikachu in Pokemon GO. The Star Wars: The Last Jedi director could have avoided being pranked by Boyega and Tran if only he’d have been up on his Pokemon GO knowledge.
This isn’t the first time that Star Wars: The Last Jedi cast members have voiced their appreciation for video games. Most notably, John Boyega was one of the main voices calling for Star Wars Battlefront to add a story campaign. EA and the Battlefront team did decide to add a story campaign to Star Wars Battlefront 2 and it’s very likely that Boyega’s insistence (along with millions of other Star Wars fans) helped make that happen.
Fans will be delighted to hear that the Star Wars cast are avid gamers, not just because it means that fans could run into them in online multiplayer lobbies or at a Pokemon GO EX raid. It’s also positive to hear that the cast and crew are able to blow off steam in between takes, whether that’s by playing games, playing pranks, or both.
Pokemon GO is available now on Android and iOS devices.
