It turns out that season 2 of Star Wars: Visions may be closer than expected, at least if a certain rumor does its required heavy lifting. A Star Wars insider now claims that the next batch of episodes is set to release sometime in 2022, and has actually been in steady development since the first season ended. If the claims can be trusted, then that’s one more nugget of fun for Star Wars fans in 2022, aside from the soon-to-be-released Obi-Wan Kenobi as well as season 3 of The Mandalorian.

The report comes from Star Wars insider Jordan Maison of Cinelinx, who claims that a number of independent sources have revealed season 2’s 2022 debut. According to those sources, the new episodes will likely release in the fall, with more information set to be revealed during Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, California from May 26th to the 29th. This also just so happens to coincide with the May 27th release of Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney Plus. Naturally, these claims remain unverified, and should thus be taken with a few grains of salt (harvested from Crait for authenticity’s sake). But the idea isn’t all that farfetched.
Star Wars: Visions earned largely positive reactions from viewers, notably working as a creative new set of stories that even newcomers could enjoy without a deep dive into 40 years worth of movies. The series’ anime roots also offered creators unique opportunities to tell stories and depict situations that wouldn’t work in any other medium. Where else will fans find an officially licensed Star Wars release depicting one dude splitting a Star Destroyer in half with a lightsaber?
While there’s no concrete information on which animation studios are taking part in Star Wars: Visions season 2 (possibly due to there being no concrete information at all), Maison further claims that several of the studios from season 1 will return to release continuations of their stories from the first season. This would be fitting, considering the breakout popularity of some episodes, like the visually stunning debut The Duel and the family drama-filled Lop and Ochō. Of course, pretty much every anime in Star Wars Visions has its fans, including The Ninth Jedi, which definitely offers an opening for more stories to be told with its new lightsaber-wielding protagonist.
Whether this rumor proves true or just a legend, there’s no denying that Star Wars: Visions would do well to release a second season. There’s no other place in the official Star Wars franchise where fans can enjoy a stylized samurai-style lightsaber fight in one episode and a Jedi joining a rock band in another. That sort of creative freedom is precious and definitely deserves to come to the forefront more often.
Star Wars: Visions season 1 is now available on Disney Plus.
