StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void will detail the end of Raynor, Kerrigan, and Artanis’ journey, which has spanned the entirety of the the StarCraft 2 trilogy. Legacy of the Void will also feature Amon, a xel’naga who wants to remake the universe in his image - after first completely destroying it, of course, as any good primary antagonist would do. Luckily for the universe, the Protoss aren’t willing to go down without a fight, while Raynor rallies the human forces and Kerrigan leads her brand of Zerg.

The trailer also features some rather ominous statements from the protagonists, with Artanis promising that the Protoss will be “the last left standing” while battling long odds against Amon, who has corrupted human, Zerg, and Protoss warriors to join his hybrid army. Players who happened to participate in the free Legacy of the Void prologue have already seen just how desperate the heroes of the story truly are, and the trailer accurately captures the mixture of despair and defiant hope that characterizes the narrative going into the final installment of the series.

Although the StarCraft 2 series has an incredibly loyal playerbase, the games have seen some of the popularity that StarCraft: Brood War garnered in the mid-to-late 2000s wane in the wake of other games like League of Legends and Dota 2. The trailer helps rekindle some of the fervor that defined the excitement of the gaming world prior to StarCraft 2’s initial release in 2010, but the RTS gameplay is going to have to be vastly improved to threaten the success and player numbers of the most popular MOBA titles.

Naturally, Blizzard knows it needs to revitalize its flagship RTS, and cinematic trailers like the one released at Blizzcon today are a good start.
