Getting a Sheep or a Rabbit
To gain access to the sewing machine, players will first need to obtain cloth. To do this, sheep or rabbits are required. In order to get a sheep or a rabbit, players will need a deluxe barn or a deluxe coop respectively. Both of these are the final upgrades for the buildings and thus will take a lot of resources and several in game days to obtain.

Starting off, players will either need the standard version of the coop or barn. Robin will be able to build and upgrade both. The standard barn will cost 6,000 gold, 350 wood and 150 stone. To upgrade it to the big barn, players will need 12,000 gold, 450 wood, and 200 stone. Finally, to upgrade it to the deluxe barn, 25,000 gold, 550 wood, and 300 stone are required.
Getting Wool
Once a deluxe barn or coop has been obtained, players can then buy a sheep or a rabbit. Both will produce wool. Rabbits will produce wool every 4 days (as well as occasionally dropping a rabbit’s foot) while a sheep will produce wool at varying rates depending on their happiness, usually taking between one to three days. Sheep need to be shorn however with the shears purchasable from Marnie. Rabbits on the other hand, will just leave wool around the coop.
Making Cloth
Once players have wool, they will need to use a loom to turn it into cloth. A loom is a craftable item whose crafting recipe is attained once the player reaches farming level 7. A loom requires 60 wood, 30 fiber, and 1 unit of Pine tar. Pine tar can be obtained from pine trees with a tapper, much the same way maple syrup can be attained from maple trees.
Using the Sewing Machine
Once players have made cloth, they should exit the farmhouse the next day between 6am and 11am and Emily will appear. She will tell players that they can now use the sewing machine in her house. To use it, simply interact with it in her house and provide a unit of cloth and one other item. There are numerous different types of clothing pieces available to make and so players will want to experiment.
Dyeing Clothes
Unlocking the sewing machine also unlocks the dye pots. Taking a red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple item to the dye pots next to the sewing machine will allow players to dye their entire outfit whatever color they desire, provided the items they are currently wearing can be dyed. Individual items can also be dyed by feeding the article of clothing in question into the sewing machine where the cloth would normally go, and then selecting a colored item. Doing this multiple times can saturate the intended color. Also, using a prismatic shard or rainbow shell this way will bring up the color slider similar to using the dye pots.
Obtaining a Personal Sewing Machine
As of the 1.5 update, players may get a a sewing machine of their very own. The 1.5 update introduced special requests from the villagers for the player to complete for unique rewards. Emily is one such requester and she requests a ruby, topaz, emerald, jade, and amethyst in her request entitled “Rock Rejuvenation.” Players will need to have had access to Emily’s sewing machine for a week before this request can appear however. Once it’s completed, Emily will mail the player their own personal sewing machine.
